Joseph B. Sobel, M.D, MPH, MBA

Dr. Joseph B. (J.B.) Sobel serves as vice president and chief medical officer of senior products for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, which has more than 6,000 employees and serves more than 3.5 million members in the state and across the country.

In this role, he oversees the care management and population health areas, as well as senior products medical reviewers, assuring compliance with Medicare requirements. He also leads the programs for Quality Improvement and STARS, a consumer rating system used by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He oversees STAR quality efforts for the Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (DSNP) programs.

Prior to joining BlueCross in 2014, Sobel served as senior medical director for Coventry Health Care of Georgia. There, he led Coventry’s medical management program for commercial and Medicare Advantage products while overseeing clinical quality programs that included credentialing and quality management functions. He went on to lead the four-state market of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana for Aetna as a senior medical director in their Southeast Division.

He also served with BlueChoice HealthPlan, a subsidiary of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, as chief medical officer of health services with oversight for all medical management, population health and clinical quality functions.

Sobel is board certified in emergency medicine and urgent care medicine and has over 10 years of experience in direct patient care. He is a Fellow, American College of Emergency Physicians and American Academy of Emergency Medicine. He is also a vanguard member of the American Association of Physician Leadership and a member of the Tennessee Medical Association and the American Medical Association.

Sobel received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University and Master’s degrees in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh and Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Science from Washington & Jefferson College.
